This Traditional Culture Themed English Corner aims to encourage participants to speak English with confidence, tell China’s stories in English, and carry forward the brilliance of Chinese culture.
本周主题：中华传统文化之烟柳画桥
Theme of This Week: Misty Willows and Painted Bridges in Traditional Chinese Culture
“烟柳画桥” 出自北宋词人柳永的《望海潮》，词里写 “烟柳画桥，风帘翠幕，参差十万人家”，一下子就把江南水乡的柔美景象勾勒了出来：春日的柳树笼罩在朦胧水汽里，精致的石桥带着彩绘雕花，河畔人家的帘幕在微风里轻轻晃动。
这不仅仅是一句写景的词，更是中国人独有的审美意境。江南的水乡古镇里，杨柳、石桥、流水，共同构成了中国人对 “诗意栖居” 的想象。画桥不只是交通的设施，更是建筑与艺术的结合，桥上的雕花、彩绘，藏着古人的匠心与审美；而烟柳的朦胧，又给这份景致添了几分含蓄的韵味。
如今，我们再提起 “烟柳画桥”，也是在回望传统文化里的那份温柔与浪漫，感受古人笔下的烟火诗意。
本周让我们走进诗意中国，共赏江南美。
Willow-lined misty banks and ornate painted bridges is a line from Watching the Tidal Bore by Liu Yong, a poet of the Northern Song Dynasty.
The poem writes:
Misty willows, painted bridges,
wind-swept curtains and emerald screens,
scattered are a hundred thousand homes.
It vividly depicts the gentle and beautiful scenery of the Jiangnan water towns. In spring, willow trees are veiled in misty moisture. Exquisite stone bridges are carved and painted with delicate patterns, while the curtains of riverside houses sway gently in the breeze.
This is far more than a simple description of scenery; it embodies the unique aesthetic conception of the Chinese people. In the ancient water towns of Jiangnan, willows, stone bridges and flowing water together shape the Chinese vision of living a poetic life. Painted bridges are not merely means of transportation, but a perfect combination of architecture and art. The carvings and paintings on the bridges reflect the craftsmanship and aesthetic taste of the ancients. The hazy beauty of misty willows adds subtle and implicit charm to the landscape.

This English corner is built for Chinese and international students. In a relaxed vibe, you'll speak with confidence, learn from one another, and share Chinese stories, turning culture into a bridge for communication. We encourage you to speak up, practice your spoken English, improve your pronunciation and grammar, and also help international students to get to know more about Chinese. With clear topics, simple expressions, and peer support across cultures, you'll grow your language skills in both directions, and broaden your global perspective as well.
If you want to go deeper into the stories behind traditional Chinese culture, are willing to talk in English about the flavors of your hometown or the tastes of your childhood, or are simply a little curious, a little shy, but ready to take one small step forward, then this English corner is for you. We don't chase perfect pronunciation. We just encourage brave voices. Every time you share, it's a fresh start toward something better.
